Now is the time of year when people do their spring cleaning.  Some people love it and some hate it (me!), but it is time to be rid of the accumulated dirt and clutter from winter and let in the fresh, sweet air of spring.

Why does this feel so cathartic for people? While it has much to do with the health benefits of cleaning – getting rid of dust and pet dander, it also has much to do with energy balance and flow. Our universe is comprised of energy, that which we can see – the material stuff around us – and that which we can’t – microwaves, ultraviolet light, etc., as well as the energy bodies of living things.

Energy flows constantly, always changing form and location. Though we often resist change – which is obviously a form of energy flow, it is this very thing that signals to us something new, something fresh – and that is something we desire. While in our distant past new and fresh was important for our survival – as in fresh food and water, it continues on as a primal craving for the latest fashions, new technology, exotic food, and exciting new ways of thinking.

We clear out the old to make room for the new. New seasons, especially spring, inspire us to get rid of old, stale energy/air/things to make room for new energy. Winter is a time of stillness and death, while spring brings forth new life. How can you not be inspired to get that which is associated with death and stagnation out of your home?!

As you go about clearing your environmental spaces – your home and your yard, I would also like you to think about what other energetic spaces also need clearing. Everything is connected, and while environmental clearing affects all of our energy bodies, it may not be sufficient to leave it at that.

There are 4 basic energetic levels – environmental (your physical environment), physical (your body), mental-emotional (your mind and emotions) and the soul. Clearing out old, stale energies at all levels is important for growth and rejuvenation. It affects how we feel physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually/psychically. If any one level is cleared we feel better, if they are all cleared we feel great! And, believe it or not,  it is the foundation of all that we are able to do. The better we feel, the more power we have, the more we can create!

The world is a place of energy – even to the smallest particle of matter. Every place and everything has an energetic signature, and can absorb and emit these energies into the environment around them for a very long time. The same is true of people. Generally speaking, people can tend to be positive or negative, and we transmit our energies to places we live in and objects we own. 

Negative people are everywhere and have been throughout history. When we acquire property and objects that have been associated with negative people, these things emit negative energy back into our environment. Houses and yards, apartments, businesses, vehicles, furniture – especially antiques, jewellery – all of these and more – anything we buy, rent, or even borrow can have negative, disruptive energy associated with it.

Consider the following:

• Do you feel uncomfortable when you walk into your house? Do certain areas of your home or workplace seem dark and heavy despite the sunny window and cheery decor?
• Do you get headaches or feel ill when you spend too much time in your house or workplace?
• Does maintaining order and organization in your home or office seem a repetitive, onerous chore?
• Do things in your home continuously disappear or are moved from where you left them?
• Are things in your home or vehicle constantly breaking down, without reason (i.e., it’s new or very well maintained)?
• Does no one sit in that beautiful antique chair? Why is it you never want to wear your great grandmother’s necklace?
• Do you frequent yard sales? Do you love antiques?
• Do you own an older home? Or do you rent your place? Do you have a business with a lot of traffic?
• Do you watch the news?! (When was the last time you saw something positive on the news?)
• Is your house on the market but just not selling?
• Is your workplace really filled with upbeat, cheerful, positive people all the time? (Not likely!).
