Essences are based on the Japanese art of Sumi-e. These ink and brush drawings are deceptively simple. I started with the question, "What are the minimum number of expressive lines that would allow the viewer to recognize the image?"
Also, the idea of "deceptively simple" continues to the actual painting of the lines - a single moment in which I lose focus, hesitate or make a single error in speed or pressure - will destroy the image and I will have to start over! Please keep this in mind when you view them :-)
