Why Are We Here? On Soul and Life Purpose
Tuesday, March 9, 2010 Recently I have received a number of requests from people needing help in finding their life purpose, so I thought I would take the opportunity to write a bit about it.
Many people have the idea that life purpose is some kind of specific mission they are here to accomplish or even a career they are “supposed” to have, but this is not exactly it. Allow me to explain my understanding of life purpose.
There is soul purpose and there is life purpose. Your life purpose is to express your soul purpose and experience, develop and learn those things you came here to learn. And, as my joyful guide Charisse likes to say, “Learn, love and laugh!”

You are an individual soul with individual preferences, gifts, and talents. In your development as a spiritual being you choose to expand on those things that give you joy and meaning – both incarnated and not. While you are in spirit form you learn and help other beings, the same as you would when you are incarnated in a physical body. Your physical incarnations are extended learning environments for what you are developing while non-incarnated.
Your soul purpose then is what your gifts, talents and preferences are while in spirit form – and in physical form. You can discover what they are with an Akashic Records or Soul Realignment consultation, and/or you can do some digging on your own through meditation or coaching. I’ll get to the “how” of it in a bit.
So, then “why am I here?” boils down to the expression of your soul purpose and the experiences you wanted to have while here. Soul purpose is more general than life purpose, since there are myriad ways for you to express your soul purpose. If you take “communication” as a very broad soul purpose, you could express that as, for example, a writer, news anchor, spiritual leader, teacher, radio talk show host, blogger, artist, or speaker. (I am being very general here to make a point. Your Soul Realignment reading goes into much more detail).
Life purpose can be expressed as a career, certainly, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a hobby, a passion or a quality that you bring to the space you are in, and it changes – it may express itself differently as you grow and evolve. For example, a person who is very nurturing, grounded and practical may express their soul purpose in the care of their family and as a healer. Another who is gifted in manifesting money could be a teacher who helps others learn the skill as well as having a career as a charity fundraiser. A creative person may bring their innovation to their career in research and development and paint landscapes on the weekend.
And this is where the “how do I find it?!” comes in. Look over your life and what you’ve done and been. Look very closely at those things, events, actions and skills that have brought you the most joy and sense of being truly alive. Then think about your current life and what you would like to do, be or have in the future that brings you a sense of joy, meaning, fulfillment and aliveness. Seek out the common threads between them. This is the magic “X” that marks the spot to dig even further!
As for what you came to learn, develop and experience… I will muse on this in another post! Stay tuned! :-)
One last thing: the key to life – life purpose, success and happiness – is love and joy. Use your intuition and follow your heart (do what you love and that brings you joy) and you will be on the right path.
To your joy, fulfillment and success!
Blessings,
Keena
